- Conventional trailers commonly use 10% for planning.
- Fifth-wheel and gooseneck trailers commonly use 15%.

Four-wheel-down (flat) towing
“Yes” means the configuration appears in Ford’s model-year guide. It is not a universal instruction: each vehicle has its own speed, distance, transfer-case, transmission, battery, and engine-running procedures.
Before towing: Read the exact vehicle Owner’s Manual and Warranty Guide, use a separate functional braking system, and follow the tow-bar and motorhome manufacturers’ limits. Aftermarket flat-tow conversion kits may affect warranty coverage.

Tow-dolly alternative
Front-wheel-drive choices have limited dolly flexibility.
- FWD Escape and Escape Hybrid are tow-dolly approved in both guides.
- FWD Maverick and Maverick Hybrid are tow-dolly approved in both guides.
- AWD/4WD Ford vehicles cannot be towed with two wheels lifted off the ground.
- The Escape Plug-in Hybrid is listed for FWD tow-dolly use; follow its Owner's Manual and the dolly manufacturer's instructions.

Five limits have to work together
The maximum loaded trailer weight is only one limit. Confirm the exact vehicle's GVWR, rear GAWR, payload label, GCWR, and hitch rating before towing. The lowest applicable limit controls the setup.
Ford calculates these ratings with specific assumptions. Added passengers, cargo, options, accessories, hitch hardware, and trailer tongue or pin weight can reduce the trailer weight the vehicle can safely handle.
Use loaded weight, not an empty-trailer number
Include water, propane, batteries, food, tools, recreational gear, and anything else that travels in the trailer. Ford recommends weighing the fully loaded tow vehicle and trailer before a trip.
- Conventional trailer tongue weight is generally planned around 10% of loaded trailer weight
- Fifth-wheel or gooseneck pin weight is generally planned around 15%
- Do not tow until the vehicle has been driven at least 1,000 miles
- Use a separate functional trailer brake system when required; Ford recommends one for any towed vehicle
- Cross safety chains under the trailer tongue and confirm lights, breakaway equipment, tires, and connections
Verify the truck before you choose
Use the door-jamb Safety Compliance Certification Label, payload label, window sticker, hitch label, and Owner's Manual for the vehicle you are considering. A model-level maximum does not guarantee that every vehicle with that badge carries the same rating.
